I took a chance on this book, because crossdressing, ignoring my usual aversion to books with rock star MCs. Hindsight being what it is I should’ve stayed the no rock stars! course. Lesson learned. Before I go into why this book largely didn’t work for me let me just say that I have very little patience for theatrics and melodrama in my off time. When too much day job seeps into my reading it gives me a headache, makes me feel like I never get a break. But I'm fairly certain I’m in the min [...]

Rated F - The Man on Top of the World is marketed by its publishers as General Fiction/Romance. I should add that it includes m/m, m/f, m/m/f, f/f and m/m/f/f sexual combinations. Considering the amount of sex in this novel, I’m just glad neither of the main characters had a dog. The book also includes what feels like a glorification of drug use, there is domestic abuse – and if cheating is a trigger for you – it is obviously not one for this author. So, what is The Man on Top of the World [...]

*A copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley for the purpose of an honest review.*Johnny have a crush on the rockstar in the band his playing drums, but everyone else also has a crush on him. Can he ever be his?I felt like I was dropped in a dirty movie because it started out with a blow job and I kept on in a sensual writing that made me exited but also embarrassed. I don't know what's with this book, I've read hundreds of books hotter then hell, but this one made me blush. [...]

Reviewed for Just Love: Romance blogI received an advance review copy in exchange for a fair and honest review. The Man On Top Of The World is set in the 1970s and follows the turbulent, secret relationship between our main character, drummer Jonathan Maxwell, and his love interest, glam rock superstar Izzy Rich (try to picture a less dignified David Bowie). If it wasn't already perfectly clear from the blurb and other reviews, there is a lot of (group/unprotected) sex, (hard) drugs and rock n ro [...]

An emotional rollercoaster of a celebrity soap opera, The Man on Top of the World is a wonderfully written bit of erotic romance that comes alive on the strength of its characters. Vanessa Clark throws a lot into the story - light BDSM and polyamory, explicit bisexuality, genderqueer glam, and more - and tops it all off with an emotional wallop. This is a story unabashedly indulges in the true decadence of the 70s glam rock scene. In addition to the well-used groupies, there's a lot of drugs and [...]

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in return for an honest review."The unbearable anticipation. The unimaginable tension. The mystifying transformation. Unpredictable. No way of knowing when it would come and when it would end, not that it mattered to him either way. He lived for the moment and would die for it all: the rock and roll, the glitter, the makeup, the flamboyant clothes, the drugs, the booze, the debauchery, the androgyny. Who would dare join him on the ride?"I could leave [...]

I just finished reading this book, and oh my gosh, what a roller coaster of emotions! Vanessa Clark has written a fabulous debut novel. It's LGBT with a focus on the B and the T (Bisexual and Transgender). It's an erotic and complex unconventional love story sprinkled with role playing and BDSM. It's a tale about the decadence of glam rock in the 70s. It's just so many things, but overall, it's a great story. One thing I want to mention in this review is I've noticed in some of the other reviews [...]

Dreck. I started skimming a few pages in (the story opens with a gratuitous blowjob which the author delivers in several pages of detail) and ultimately ended up skimming through large swathes of the book. The story claims to take place in the early 70s but most of the "historical" references were 1980s of later. For example, the drug ecstasy, cassettes, and VHS tapesntage 80s. In the early seventies it was 8 track tapes, reel-to-reel and film/movies. The band at one point in the story makes a m [...]

*ARC provided through NetGalley in exchange for an impartial review*This books was so many things I don't like. It takes place in the past, and I hate the necessary secrecy of homosexual relationships in historical books, so I avoid them like the plague. It also glorifies drug use. Like heroin drug use. I'm not morally opposed to this, but still its not my bag. It also includes a very open relationship and (view spoiler)[an unforgivable betrayal (hide spoiler)]. I enjoy a bit of openness but thi [...]

(I received a digital copy of this book in return for an honest review)Note to self: ALWAYS research the author and the book before reading. When I saw this book, my heart beat with excitement over that cover. Then I saw the description and I was completely sold. A book about music? I'm in. A book about a complex LGBT relationship that faces an 'impact'? GIMME. But it was nothing like I was expecting. What I should have done was find out that Vanessa Clark was actually a writer who was well-know [...]

The Man on Top of the World,  Vanessa ClarkReview from Jeannie Zelos book reviewsGenre:  LGBTQIA I was so looking forward to this book, it sounded like one I’d love. Sadly I was wrong – I just didn’t connect with it. The two main characters seemed to me to be clearly troubled, confused, deep, and yet I just didn’t like either of them – couldn’t get a sense “of” them, of what sort of person they really were underneath all the front they put on. I need to care about characters [...]

(I received a copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.)I could not take this book seriously because of the dialogue. It was cringy and just strange. Like, no one would talk like that, and it just ruined everything for me. And no I don't mean cus it's set in the 70s, it wasn't weird language it was just the way the dialogue flowed (or didn't) that felt so out of place for me. It was super clichéd and it didn't feel real. Kind of like fan fiction to be honestWithout the cringy and un [...]

So, I wrote a more in-depth review on my blog, for anyone wanting gory details full of spoilers. I'll link it at the bottom. But in general, I did enjoy the story. It was fun; granted, before Roxanne came along and turned the story into a love triangle disaster. I'm not a fan of love stories as any sort of conflict; it's a tired cliche and often leaves me pissed off. I would have preferred the story to focus more so on Jonathon and Izzy having to keep their relationship a secret, and watching Iz [...]

****Copy from NetGalley in return for an honest review****I requested this on the basis of the blurb - and although it does do everything that the back of the book suggests, it just didn't work for me the way that I was hoping for. I was rolling my eyes with exasperation at several points and skim-read some bits when it got a bit repetitive. It wasn't totally terrible, and there were points when I was really interested to find out what happened next, so I'm sure it will work for other people.

2016 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: The Man on Top of the World by Vanessa ClarkVivid writing, great details, lurid, up and down ride, definitely memorable.
